How to Make Low Cost Terrace Garden Sprinkling System

This low cost homemade home garden sprinkling system has been made from all re-used material that we generally discard and give away to rag pickers. The purpose of making this system is to use the waste water of household reverse osmosis (RO) filtration system productively. The shown sprinkling terrace garden system needs following discarded /fresh material:

  • Used or New Rubber/PVC pipe-as per the required length. New pipe Cost: @ 10-20/running meter
  • Collecting tank- a not in used fish tank/ bucket/ plastic bin/container . Cost : 60-200/piece
  • An aerator type pump (pumping devise) that we use in fish tanks for aeration or use in desert coolers in India. Cost : 70-150/piece
  • Waste water, Tape, electricity connection.

How it works

Connect the waste water pipe of your RO to the ‘Collecting Tank’ and put a ‘pumping devise’ inside it that is connected to electricity. Also fit the rubber pipe to ‘pumping’ devise and while connecting it to flower pots or terrace garden system, make holes at places where you need to drip irrigate your plants. Close the pipe at the end with tape so that when water is pumped it should not pass through and develop pressure. So, now you have one end of rubber pipe connected to pumping devise and another closed.

As you get water collected in your tank, run the pump, the water will start flowing and dripping from holes to the planters. Generally the holes made in rubber pipe give uneven sprinkling experience, to avoid that one can use regular unused or discarded electricity wire or mobile earphone (1-2 inch for each hole) wire to fix them at places made for holes. Here you just need to remove the metal wire from the electricity wire cord to make passage for water. You will see water dripping with continuous flow.
