adaptation community picGIZ: Adaptation to climate change is much about ‘doing things differently because of climate change’ (Bo Lim), or making the right decision in light of climate change. Adaptation has the ultimate goal of avoiding harm and costs that can arise from doing business as usual without taking climate change into consideration. It often tries to address the most vulnerable communities. Tackling such a task can hardly proceed without analysis, assessment or methods for informing decision-making, which may range from the very simple to the rather sophisticated.

Adaptation is still relatively new as a policy or management field, but very dynamic. In light of the impacts from climate change that are already being experienced and those expected to come, some form of a response is a bare necessity. Over the last decade, many countries have developed strategies and policies to address adaptation. Practical experiences are starting to become available.

This calls for learning from each other – especially exchange of knowledge across countries and regions. To this end, AdaptationCommunity.net offers:

  • Knowledge: an inventory of methods for adaptation to climate change with a clear focus on practical application of methods and experiences with using them, including their demonstration through webinars (openly available);
  • Community: a platform for exchange among practitioners such as decision-makers, planners and advisors on adaptation to climate change, particularly in the global South (registration required).

AdaptationCommunity.net addresses priorities and builds on practical experiences of adaptation decision-makers from many of the world’s countries, particularly India, Indonesia, Mexico, the Philippines, Tunisia, South Africa, Grenada and Germany, which are all partner countries of the Inventory of Methods for Adaptation to Climate Change (IMACC) project.

AdaptationCommunity.net systematically refers to other climate knowledge platforms to provide convenient guidance to users on the best available information. To this extent, it cooperates with ci:grasp (the Climate Impacts: Global and Regional Adaptation Support Platform), the Climate Knowledge Brokers Group (CKB), and climateplanning.org.  It also makes use of innovative tools such the API Tagging Tool, which connects similar content on the web.
